What different types of lightbulbs are available?

Lighting accounts for about 20% of a home energy bill.  Here are the different types available:

LED

LED bulbs are the most efficient lighting technology out there and every different type of bulb you'd need is now available in LED form, including main ceiling GLS bulbs, spotlights and candles, and tubes.

LEDs work by means of a solid-state diode that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. With no filament being burned, as is the case with incandescent and halogen bulbs, LEDs benefit from a much longer lifetime than older technologies. Good LED bulbs can last for up to 25 years.

In terms of efficiency, LEDs are vastly superior to older technologies and continue to improve.  Some of the most efficient bulbs on the market are now producing over 100 lumens of light per watt.

CFL

CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) became a widespread lighting technology during the last 20 years as a more efficient upgrade from halogens and incandescent bulbs.  CFLs work by passing a current through a tube containing argon and a small amount of mercury vapour, generating ultraviolet light; this then excites a phosphor coating inside the tube which produces visible light.

Topten UK only features LED bulbs and spotlights, but good CFLs are still a huge improvement over traditional bulbs in terms of efficiency and running costs.
